BONJAH's tale is truly unique...
It begins with a transglobal ocean journey from strife-torn South
Africa all the way to New Zealand nearly two decades ago. In search
of a better life for themselves and their son, Glenn Mossop's
(vocals, acoustic guitar) parents bundled themselves and their
youngster in a small yacht and sailed the world's oceans for two
years eventually deciding to call Tauranga home. Here Glenn met
NZ locals Regan Lethbridge (guitar) and David Morgan (bass). For
ten years the trio refined their chops at beautiful Lemon Tree
Bay before ultimately making the move to call Melbourne home.
But not before they recruited (rescued..) Dan Chisholm (drums),
a rookie corporate lawyer staring down the barrel of a life-long
commitment to limited liability and hostile takeovers!!
Upon arrival in Melbourne in 2006, with nary a penny to their
name, they snagged the last ever legal busking license for a full-piece
band and took to the streets. Having played over 450 shows including
seven national tours, they have a loyal legion of fans nation-wide
and they recently took on a full-time percussionist (James Majernik).
Bring back the fire is Bonjah's
debut single and a prelude to their debut album due for release
in late January 2009.
A unique, powerful mix of folk and roots and a good example of
what happens when great song-writing coincides with a touring
band that has truly found its feet. Glenn's hypnotic, soulful
vocal tones, poetic lyrics and his spine-tingling melodies provide
a foundation around which the band breathes and pulsates beautifully.
